چکیده

Subjects identified concurrent synthetic vowel pairs that differed in relative amplitude and fundamental frequency (F0). Subjects were allowed to report one or two vowels for each stimulus, rather than forced to report two vowels as was the case in previously reported experiments of the same type. At all relative amplitudes, identification was better at a fundamental frequency difference (DF0) of 6% than at 0%, but the effect was larger when the target vowel amplitude was below that of the competing vowel ~210 or 220 dB!. The existence of a DF0 effect when the target is weak relative to the competing vowel is interpreted as evidence that segregation occurs according to a mechanism of cancellation based on the harmonic structure of the competing vowel. Enhancement of the target based on its own harmonic structure is unlikely, given the difficulty of estimating the fundamental frequency of a weak target. Details of the pattern of identification as a function of amplitude and vowel pair were found to be incompatible with a current model of vowel segregation. © 1997 Acoustical Society of America. @S0001-4966~97!03904-0#

Vowel-specific effects in concurrent vowel identification

An experiment investigated the effects of amplitude ratio ~235 to 35 dB in 10-dB steps! and fundamental frequency difference ~0%, 3%, 6%, and 12%! on the identification of pairs of concurrent synthetic vowels. Vowels as weak as 225 dB relative to their competitor were easier to identify in the presence of a fundamental frequency difference (DF0). Vowels as weak as 235 dB were not. Identificatio...

Vowel-specific effects in concurrent vowel identification.

An experiment investigated the effects of amplitude ratio (-35 to 35 dB in 10-dB steps) and fundamental frequency difference (0%, 3%, 6%, and 12%) on the identification of pairs of concurrent synthetic vowels. Vowels as weak as -25 dB relative to their competitor were easier to identify in the presence of a fundamental frequency difference (delta F0). Vowels as weak as -35 dB were not. Identifi...

Ten experiments on vowel segregation

This report describes ten experiments on concurrent vowel segregation and identification. Experiments are numbered from 1 to 10. Experiment 1 was designed to be sensitive to a variety of hypothetical mechanisms by which frequency modulation (FM) might affect identification. The results were mostly negative, in the sense that no effect was found that could not be attributed to other factors. The...

The role of interaural time difference and fundamental frequency difference in the identification of concurrent vowel pairs.

The ability of subjects to identify both components of a concurrent vowel pair was determined when vowel fundamental frequency difference and an interaural time difference (ITD) in one of the vowels were introduced. In agreement with earlier studies it was found that introduction of a fundamental frequency difference significantly improved detection performance (by 22% for a 1 semitone differen...

Vowel separation using the reassigned amplitude-modulation spectrum

This paper presents a method for segregating and recognizing concurrent vowels based on the amplitude modulation spectrum. Vowel segregation is accomplished by F0guided grouping of harmonic components encoded in the amplitude modulation spectrum while vowel recognition is achieved by classifying the segregated vowel spectrum. Main features of the method are (1) the reassigned technique is emplo...
